Estate Sale VS Liquidation

Estate Sale VS Liquidation

Estate sales and liquidations are two ways to sell off the contents of an estate. These are common practices when someone downsizes or when someone has passed away.

Of these two, estate sales are better known, but it is not always the best option. To help you find the best way to clean out your estate’s contents we want to help you understand what both are and the benefits they bring.

What is an Estate Sale?

An estate sale is a large sale with the purpose of selling all or most of the contents of the property. It’s similar to a yard sale, but much better organized and with nearly everything for sale. Unlike a garage sale or a yard sale, most estate sale prices are set in stone and haggling is often discouraged.

When hiring a company for an estate sale, they will handle everything. From setting prices to organizing the sale and even getting the word out. They will do all the work with no upfront fee. The usual agreement is that the company will take a certain percentage of the sale profits.

This is usually the best way to get the most out of a home’s contents because people are buying items one at a time. The downside to estate sales, however, is that you are dependent on all the items selling which is rarely the case.

At the end of most estate sales, there are many items left over. The owner now has to figure out what to do with the leftover items which can cost more money or time.

What is Estate Liquidation

Liquidations are quite different from an estate sale. Liquidation is when a company or individual comes in and buys all of the estate contents of value. From furniture to jewelry, collectibles and TVs, they will purchase everything that they perceive has value.

This is a quick and easy way to get money from the contents of an estate without investing time and energy into cleaning, organizing, and pulling off an estate sale. You only need to work with one person and they are in and out in no time.

The downside is that you may not get as much as you would from an estate sale. And, depending on the liquidator, you may still have some leftover items.

Should you choose an Estate Sale or an Estate Liquidation?

Choosing the best option for your unique situation comes down to your individual needs. Do you want fast and easy or would you prefer to take your time and try to get the most money possible for the estate’s contents?

If you have the time and believe most or all of the items will be sold then you can consider an estate sale.

If you just want a fair price for all the contents and don’t want to hassle with organizing an estate sale over the next several weeks then consider an estate liquidation

Other Services to Consider

Estate cleanout

An estate sale or liquidation will not always mean that everything is removed from the home. Often times there are additional contents and other things left in the home. An estate cleanout will help with this.

Estate cleanouts are a service in which a trusted company gathers up all the contents of the home that need to be removed and they haul them away for a fee. You’ve likely heard of junk removal companies. They are similar except they often take more care in their approach and do their best to donate and recycle items instead of trashing it all.

Estate Auction

An estate auction allows you to sell items via auction. This is a great way to get the most money from the high-end items you wish to sell. This is not for every item and there is no guarantee your item will sell at auction.  An appraisal will need to be done prior to items going to auction but this will give you insights into how much your items may sell for.
