It’s never too early to start thinking about donations

Every year, many people start to collect their donations toward the end of the year – in advance of the upcoming tax season. Even though we’re a couple seasons away from winter, it’s not too early to start getting organized with your donations.

Closets
Closets are the ‘front line’ for donations. Top to bottom – left to right. These troves are everyday reminders of the jeans that we’re “going to lose weight and fit into again”. Shoes covered in dust and belts that seemed to have shrunk over time make for great items to put in the donation box.

Basements & Crawlspaces
Usually reserved for holiday decorations and luggage, basements and crawlspaces are a great place to start. Regardless of the weather outside, you can always start separating clothing, toys, coats and house wares. You’ll be surprised what you’ve replaced over the course of the year. And really – how many suitcases do you really need?

Attics
Too many horror movies take place in the attic. Is your attic a horror story waiting to be told? If you’re lucky enough to have a basement AND attic, you’re most likely ready to start sifting through boxes and bags collecting dust.

Garages
Garages are the great dumping ground – especially for families with kids. Extra bikes – sports equipment – furniture – toys (that are now outgrown) – all seem to collect. Don’t wait until the weather turns – spend a full day and pull everything out onto the driveway. You’ll do two things: 1) Clean out the garage and 2) find a trunk full of items ready to find their new home!

Storage Units
Some people run out of storage space in their homes and will rent storage space. Many times, it’s ‘out of sight – out of mind’ but if you’re someone who has a storage space and you haven’t visited it in a while, maybe it’s time to hop in the car and see if there’s any clearing out you can do!

So get started now! Think of how satisfied you’ll be – not only after getting started early – but in December when you’re scrambling for receipts. All the time you invest now cleaning out those closest, the basement and attic, the garage and storage unit, can now be saved for spending more time with family and friends during the holiday season. You’ll thank us later!
