Decluttering a house, property, basement or barn can often feel like an overwhelming task. It is easy for things to accumulate over time to the point where we have a hard time even getting started. 

It can feel like an impossible task, but with these tips and/or a little help, you can have your spaces decluttered in no time.


DIY tips for decluttering your home

If you are staring at what seems like an impossible task, but you are ready to take it on, then we have some tips for you to help. 


  1. Create a space to help organize things. Have a section for things to keep, things to donate or sell and a section for things to be thrown away (if you have a dumpster or truck for the trashable items then you can bypass the throw away section and take things directly to the dumpster). This helps during the organization process but it also helps you to see when you are keeping too much. 
  2. Start with the easiest clutter first. Trash, broken items, things you no longer need etc. Before you open a drawer or box make sure to clean the easiest items first. This will make organizing and cleaning the rest of the space easier.
  3. Clean up the largest items next. Broken furniture, unused desks, old boxes, or any other large item that you don’t want or need. Clearing up these large items opens up the space and can help you see that you’re making progress right away.
  4. Begin by focusing on one area at a time. Once the easiest items are cleaned up you should begin focusing on one area to keep the work manageable. If you are focusing on one room, then start in one corner or one side of the room. Once that’s cleaned up begin moving to another section.
  5. Organize the remaining items. It’s one thing to “clean up” it’s another thing to organize. 


When decluttering an entire house or property it’s best to start with one room. This makes the job less overwhelming.

Sometimes, even with the right process, homeowners or property owners can still get stuck in their declutter tasks. The job can be too physically demanding, there may not be enough time to finish in a hurry or it’s simply too overwhelming of a job to do.
